Serena encounters Hera at the temple, who proudly declares herself Ares's fiancée, much to Serena's shock. Ares then appears and confirms his engagement to Hera, announcing an engagement banquet in three days. Hera seizes the opportunity to humiliate Serena, forcing her to wash a special black garment with ice spring water. Serena endures this silently for the sake of her child. Meanwhile, Ares's aide, Nick, questions Ares's actions. Ares reveals that the engagement is merely a ploy to draw Serena out, believing she will seek him out upon hearing the news. Seeing Serena smile in the ice spring, Ares feels a pang of heartache and inner conflict.
