Young master Huang Xiuwen of the Huang family takes a matchmaker to the Lin family to propose to Lin Xi'er, presenting the jade bracelet "The Other Shore" worth a thousand gold as a betrothal gift. Lin Xi'er politely declines, citing her elder brother Lin Yuanlong's absence and her own lack of interest in marriage. Lin's mother, Madam Xu, also refuses the proposal due to the significant disparity in family status and her daughter's young age. Huang Xiuwen bids farewell with apparent politeness and composure, but secretly rewards the matchmaker handsomely. In his departing carriage, Huang Xiuwen tears off his benevolent facade, sniffing Lin Xi'er's handkerchief with a chilling, maniacal laugh, revealing his perverse and sinister true nature.
