Prince Duan, Xiao Heng, is sentenced to death for plotting against the Crown Prince. As the execution commences, his daughter Xiao Mianmian (originally a mythical beast Pixiu) uses her childlike wisdom to persuade her imperial grandfather, claiming her father's actions were merely to train the Crown Prince. The Emperor wavers, ultimately pardoning Prince Duan out of compassion and Xiao Mianmian's tears (which turn into golden beans). Just then, the Crown Prince arrives, feigning a willingness to abdicate his position. However, Xiao Mianmian seizes upon his words, cornering him into a dilemma.
