The son of Prince Fengyang, Lin Yun, faces a trial to choose a wife from among his concubines. The rules dictate that after choosing a wife, he must assume all her debts and cannot divorce her for three years. The three women present each have unique characteristics: Ye Wanqing, a strategist in the court, is intelligent but heavily in debt; Una, a barbarian woman, is wild and untamed with the highest debt, even threatening to kill whoever chooses her; and Wuyue, a white-haired maiden, is considered "unlucky" due to her appearance, suffers from a hidden illness, and is cursed with having caused the death of her family. Facing mockery from the crowd and resistance from the candidates, Lin Yun, out of compassion and long-term consideration, unexpectedly chooses Wuyue, the least favored, shocking everyone present.
