The episode opens with Amelia vehemently resisting her mother's plan to marry her off to a "blind man" from the Royston family, seeing it as a sacrifice. At this moment, her sister Annie returns home, covered in bruises and in a sorry state. It turns out she was abused and faced death threats from her in-laws, who believed her family had fallen from power. Initially, Amelia mocks her sister, but after learning of Annie's tragic situation, her attitude completely shifts. She feigns comfort and embraces her sister. However, this is merely a sinister ploy. Amelia immediately proposes to her mother behind Annie's back that Annie, now "abandoned by her in-laws," should take her place in the arranged marriage, pushing her sister into another abyss.
