Picking up immediately after the last conflict, Sammy defends his wife (Clarence's daughter) by hitting the drunken and harassing Victor. Sammy explains to his wife that this was to prove to the family that no one would dare bully her because of his presence. The couple then enters the study to meet the family elder, Clarence Lawson. While Clarence has reservations about Sammy's recent violent behavior, he also shows a hint of admiration. However, when Clarence learns that Sammy's stepfather is Charles Davis, with whom he has a past grievance, his demeanor instantly shifts from polite to icy. He outright rejects Sammy's overtures, setting the stage for future family feuds.
