Julia Russell was born into a rural family that valued sons over daughters. At 18, she fell in love with Aiden Smith, a city youth sent to the countryside, and after having a daughter, followed him to the city. But his family looked down on her, made her life hell, and even accused her daughter of stealing. Finally pushed too far, Julia left with her child and met Richard Bailey, a disabled veteran. When Aiden’s family came after her, Richard stepped up and protected them. With his support, Julia learned to read and write, used her talent for sewing to start a clothing factory, and slowly built a new life. In return, her care helped Richard regain strength in his legs. From a mistreated wife to a strong, independent businesswoman, Julia fought her way to freedom. And through it all, she and Richard grew from allies to lovers, starting a brand-new life together.
