Lin Mu'an returns as the top scholar of his provincial exam but intends to divorce his wife, Shangguan Yue, who has diligently served his parents for years and married him for good luck. He seeks to marry Chen Aoshuang, the daughter of the Jiangzhou prefect. Chen Aoshuang arrogantly uses her family's support in Lin Mu'an's imperial examinations as leverage to force him to divorce Shangguan Yue. Facing the Lin family's betrayal and Chen Aoshuang's constant humiliation, Shangguan Yue maintains her dignity. She reveals her royal bloodline, firmly rejects any insulting financial offers, and requests a ten-day extension to leave the city due to her elderly servant, Chen Ze (Ah Gong), being gravely ill. Faced with Lin Mu'an's heartlessness and the humiliation of her mentor Chen Ze (Grandpa), Shangguan Yue angrily slaps Lin Mu'an. She is then beaten and expelled from the Lin family by Lin Mu'an's mother and her associates. Heartbroken, Shangguan Yue breaks her hairpin as a vow, severing all ties with the Lin family. The critically ill Chen Ze is overcome with grief and anger upon learning the truth. Meanwhile, Shen Ling, an envoy from the宗正府 (Imperial Clan Court), races towards Qingshi County in search of the long-lost legitimate princess, building suspense to the brim.

He then instructs the ruffian Wang Wu to sneak into the room and stage an adulterous scene. The loyal servant Chen Ze (Agong) senses something is wrong and rushes to her rescue, only to fall right into Lin Mu'an's trap. Lin Mu'an publicly "catches them in the act," using "Da Gan Law" and the "Seven Grounds for Divorce" to falsely accuse Shangguan Yue of infidelity, intending to have her drowned in a pig cage and legitimately divorce her. This episode reveals Lin Mu'an's extreme hypocrisy and cruelty, as well as Shangguan Yue's tragic plight, trapped in a desperate situation.

Lin Muan, a newly appointed scholar, colludes with Li Deming, the magistrate of Qingshi County, and instigates the thug Wang Wu to frame Shangguan Yue for adultery, all in an effort to curry favor with the powerful Chen family. In court, Lin Muan hypocritically divorces his wife in public, while Li Deming disregards the law and sentences Shangguan Yue to the cruel punishment of "immersion in a pig cage." Chen Ze (Grandpa), her protector, desperately pleads for her life but is brutally beaten. Meanwhile, Shen Ling, an envoy from the Imperial Clan Court, races towards Qingshi County to find the missing princess (Shangguan Yue) before news of the emperor's death is leaked and to support her ascension to the throne.

At the execution, her loyal servant Chen Ze (Ah Gong) desperately defends her, claiming she is a legitimate daughter of the imperial family. Li Deming brutally whips Chen Ze. Lin Mu'an threatens Shangguan Yue with divorce and confession to save Ah Gong. Forced to save Ah Gong, Shangguan Yue confesses to the fabricated charges. In a critical moment, Chen Ze self-harms by removing his trousers to prove his innocence, revealing his identity as a eunuch, a "rootless person." He thus proves that Shangguan Yue could never have had an affair with him, shocking the entire crowd.

In the courtroom, Chen Ze, to protect Shangguan Yue's identity, reveals his own identity as a eunuch and requests an autopsy to prove it. However, the ruthless Lin Mu'an and Chen Aoshuang, to eliminate future trouble, falsely accuse Chen Ze of being a fugitive and forcefully sentence both of them to the pig cage punishment. At the execution ground, Shangguan Yue humbly confesses to save her grandfather, while Chen Ze cries out to the heavens, bidding farewell to the late emperor. Just at the brink of life and death, Shen Ling from the Imperial Clan Court arrives with the Emperor's遗诏 (will/edict) in time, publicly announcing the ascension of Princess Shangguan Yue to the throne, bringing a shocking reversal to the plot.
