Sophia returned home to find her uncle, Victor, gambling with others in the house. Not only had Victor lost all his money, but he had also mortgaged Sophia's mother's car and stolen her remaining savings and her mother's jewelry. When the debt collectors arrived, Sophia called the police to remove the thugs. Later, Victor and his accomplice, Anna, revealed the cruel truth: Sophia's mother had passed away in the hospital and could not be buried due to unpaid medical bills. Using this as leverage, Victor tried to force Sophia to marry the elderly Henry Berg in exchange for the funeral costs. After Victor and Anna left, they revealed their true colors; they had already accepted a large sum of money from Berg and were waiting for Sophia to reach a dead end and give in to their demands.
