At the Chen Kingdom's emperor's birthday banquet, the illusionist Jinyuan from Yan Kingdom's magic performance drew thunderous applause from the entire hall, save for Princess Qin Xi, who remained unimpressed. Faced with a provocation from Prince Ji Zi'an, the ninth prince of Yan, Qin Xi, in order to defend her nation's honor, decided to compete with Jinyuan in illusion. She borrowed Fu Ningyu's adornments and, on the spot, cast advanced hypnosis on Jinyuan, making him mistakenly believe he was the Nine-tailed Fox demoness Daji, and he proceeded to strip and fawn publicly. Although this move disgraced the Yan delegation, it also angered the second prince Qin Hao. He immediately accused Qin Xi of cheating, escalating their conflict.
