Edith and Nolan have been in a contractual marriage for three years. Longing for genuine affection, Edith attempts to share her harrowing experience of a near-miss accident at the café, only to be coldly rebuffed by Nolan, who has just returned exhausted from a rescue mission. Nolan bluntly reiterates their no-love, no-intimacy agreement and expresses annoyance when Edith mentions that he rescued a woman named Nancy. While Edith weeps in solitude, Nolan learns from his colleague Frankie at the fire station that Edith was actually injured in yesterday's gas leak. Stunned and overcome with guilt, Nolan is haunted by the memory of Edith trying to reach out to him for comfort, only to be heartlessly cut off.
