The protagonist, Lu Zhaoyan, is reborn. She remembers her husband, Ling Yu, died tragically in her previous life while repairing a river dike, and resolves to protect him thoroughly in this life. In the present, she was adopted by the Lu family. Her adoptive mother and sister covet her jade lock and treat her cruelly, believing she was abandoned by her birth parents and that the Lu family has shown her great kindness by raising her. Lu Zhaoyan refutes, stating that her adoptive family took her in to claim more food and oil coupons, and that she has endured years of abuse. Representatives from the Kuang family, Kuang Yue, and the Ling family arrive to deliver the betrothal gifts. However, Ling Yu does not appear in person, just as in her previous life. Her adoptive sister gloats over this, foreshadowing that Lu Zhaoyan will face similar predicaments and ridicule.
