To escape her ex-brother-in-law Bill's home, the protagonist Elise impulsively marries Alexander Alger, whom she has never met. She shows the marriage certificate to her worried sister Grace and moves into Alexander's surprisingly luxurious mansion. Later, Elise shares the news of her marriage with her friend Tory at a pet store. Tory is shocked to discover that Elise's new husband's surname, "Alger," is the same as that of New York's wealthiest man, casting immense doubt and shock on Elise about her husband's true identity.
