Lord Liu flies into a rage as his elder daughter, Liu Ruyan, insists on breaking off her engagement with General Qin Mu of Zhennan and marrying her impoverished cousin, Liang Bingwen, instead. Liu Ruyan claims the general is a "wife-killer" and "impotent," insisting she doesn't want to live as a widow and believing in Liang Bingwen's future political career. Observing her sister's unusual behavior, the second daughter, Liu Mingyue, keenly realizes that Liu Ruyan has also been reborn. As Liu Ruyan smugly pushes what was rightfully hers – a "bright future" – onto her, Liu Mingyue sneers inwardly. Her sister only sees the future glory of the Liang family, unaware that Liang Bingwen is actually a despicable and cruel hypocrite, and that life with the Liangs is like hell.
