After a horrific car accident, Kevin White wakes up in the hospital, greeted by Denise, a hospital volunteer. Despite a concussion, Kevin is physically unharmed, but he is immediately consumed by intense concern for his friend Ricky, who was in the car with him. The cruel reality soon unfolds: Kevin witnesses medical staff attempting a final round of resuscitation on Ricky in the adjacent bed, only for the female doctor to solemnly declare him dead.
