Prince Ning Ye Huaijin pleads with the Emperor for his unfaithful Consort Qing Mei and her lover Pan Zhongwu. He magnanimously takes the blame upon himself, even offering to relinquish his title in exchange for their lives, staging a "repaying evil with good" act. This prompts Pan Zhongwu to also intercede for Prince Ning, requesting the Emperor to continue his patronage. However, the Emperor, seeing through the charade, exposes Pan Zhongwu's cowardly nature on the spot and suspects someone is orchestrating this entire play, causing the atmosphere to suddenly become tense.
