The Bailu sisters, Bailu Ning and Bailu Ting, were married on the same day. Stepmother Liu publicly shamed Bailu Ning, the general's legitimate daughter, and then, with father Bai Yihong, secretly swapped her and her sister's marriages. Bailu Ning, originally meant to marry the sickly merchant Zhao Jingcheng, was wrongly married to Prince Ning; while Bailu Ting, who was supposed to marry Prince Ning, was instead married to Zhao Jingcheng. During the hand-touching ceremony, both grooms, by touching the brides' hands—one pair calloused, the other tender and soft—noticed that the brides' identities did not match the rumors. A conspiracy revolving around swapped identities thus began to unfold.
