The episode opens with a grand wedding where the bride, Bai Luning, marries in place of her younger sister, Bai Luting. During the fire-crossing ritual, she astonishes everyone, including the groom, Prince Ning, and her maternal uncle, Mr. Liu, by leaping over it with the prowess of a female general. Her uncle becomes suspicious, but maid Ningdong temporarily deflects his questions with the excuse that "the young lady is afraid of making a mistake." The scene then shifts to the bridal chamber, where the real Bai Luting is impatiently waiting, inadvertently revealing the truth of the "substitute marriage." At the end, her mother, Mrs. Liu, arrives at the bridal chamber and is utterly shocked to find her daughter, who was supposed to be married, there, setting the stage for future conflict.
